The Bent Pyramid of Dahshur is one of the most unique and visually striking pyramids in Egypt. Built during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu, the pyramid changes angle halfway up its structure due to an early construction miscalculation. This unintended feature offers incredible insights into the architectural challenges faced by ancient Egyptian builders.
Visitors can enter the Bent Pyramid, walking through its original corridors and experiencing the interior structure that remains largely intact. The pyramid’s smooth limestone casing, still visible in sections, offers a rare look at how pyramids originally appeared thousands of years ago.
Also commissioned by Sneferu, the Red Pyramid is considered the first successful smooth-sided pyramid and is a direct precursor to the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is Egypt’s third-largest pyramid and one of the few that visitors can freely enter.
Inside, you will explore a series of chambers leading to the burial vault. The Red Pyramid’s symmetry and precision mark a turning point in ancient Egyptian engineering, showcasing the mastery that Sneferu’s builders eventually achieved.
Located further south, the Meidum Pyramid is often called the “collapsed pyramid” due to its unique, partially ruined shape. Originally designed as a step pyramid, it was later modified to a smooth-sided structure that eventually failed. The outer casing slid away, leaving a tower-like core that rises dramatically from the surrounding desert.
Although less visited, the Meidum Pyramid is a remarkable site that provides valuable lessons about the trial-and-error process of pyramid building. It is a peaceful, open area, free from the crowds typically found at Egypt’s more famous monuments.
