Wadi El-Natrun, also known as the Scetis Valley, was originally a source of natron salt used in ancient Egyptian mummification practices. But by the 4th century AD, the valley gained spiritual importance when Christian hermits and monks—seeking solitude and a life of devotion—retreated into its remote and quiet landscapes. These early ascetics laid the foundation of organized Christian monasticism, influencing religious traditions throughout Europe and the Middle East.
At its peak, the region hosted nearly 50 monasteries. Today, four of them remain active, continuously inhabited by Coptic Orthodox monks who maintain ancient rituals, preserve sacred texts, and welcome pilgrims from around the world.
